May 2011 (speedpaints)

The length of my posts should be normalizing, as I've pretty much caught up with myself. These are speedpaints from the last week or so.

Freelance jobs have been offered to me recently, which has never happened. I find myself in a strange position of setting prices and writing contracts.

I've also voiced my concerns to my university about their curriculum for the video game/entertainment track they currently have. I've been given the green light to pursue a custom major (assuming I can find a professor to vouch for me, which shouldn't be an issue at all).

Is it good to have a custom major? Hell if I know. The only thing I can say is that I'd have to double or triple major otherwise, and as much as I love learning, I can only survive on ramen noodles for so long before I start going a little crazy.

This square brush has me entranced. Something about rendering organic subjects with it creates a tension my eyes like.

Depth issues due to a flat range in value. Still love the mood I was going for though.

Muddy. Studying cast shadows on mountains. :) Gonna hit this until I get it right.

I like big noses. You can tell because this one is huge. I like it anyway.

May 2011

Various work from the past 2 months.

As you may guess from the sign, discipline became a little bit of an issue between minecraft, portal 2, and mass effect 2. This resulted in a funny little moment where I forgot to write a paper (which has never happened in my life) and I freaked out. I scribbled in my notebook to vent my stress and it's pretty funny in hindsight.

Paintings from Class:
As previously stated, this is the first time I've ever painted. I ended up doing some things other students seemed to find odd. I take that as a good thing. :)

Assignment was to insert my face into a comic. This isn't a comic. But my face is in it. Compared to the original, my face is quite small. I suppose I don't want to see myself as much as I want to see the blindingly awesome composition and action blasty goodness. The terrible thing is, I saved the image forever ago but forgot who it is by. Here's the original. If someone knows who did it, please tell me, as they deserve credit/praise/worship/human sacrifice for their awesomeness. http://i613.photobucket.com/albums/tt220/beckypennock/PG04.jpg

These spawn from a really fun exercise a friend and I came up with. Basically, you find the "random deviation" button at deviantart.com, bookmark it, then click until you find a rough sketch. Then you draw your own versions of it and compare. It's really fun and gets you out of your subject driven comfort zone rather quickly. Next time, I'll save the originals for comparison
.

Validating the Doodle. I used to think doodles were rubbish and should never be seen, but as it turns out, the drawings I love the most from past years have been almost nothing BUT doodles. So here's to you doodle. I'm showing you to the world!

It's amazing what you remember from just seeing things in games. :) Sure, not everything's accurate, but I was pleased with how much I got considering that I wasn't really trying to 'get it' while I was playing Portal 2.

Many of my doodles were focussed around Lola, an evil super genius character I've had in my head for several months. I did a growth chart at MT forums and have become somewhat obsessed ever since...

And just to wrap this long post up, an 11 minute speedsketch.
